2019 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational Fantasy Sleeper Report

Irish eyes were smiling alright as Shane Lowry became the latest member of the major champions club at Royal Portrush.

The affable Lowry cantered home on the Northern Irish coast, practically lapping the field over the weekend as others struggled to get to grips with the inclement weather and worsening conditions.

It was something of the mission accomplished for the 32-year-old, who won the Irish Open as an amateur and who came close to prior major glory at the US Open of 2016.

It also provided proof positive that the Europeans continue to dominate on the Links, and there’s certainly work to be done for the Americans if they plan on breaking their stranglehold on the British Open.

There’s some more heavy hitting golf this week as well, as the PGA TOUR’s schedule shake-up brings the last WGC event of the season to TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee.

You may recall the name: this has hosted a PGA TOUR event for a good few years now in the form of the St Jude Classic, which sort of keeps its name here but gets suitably beefed up by the presence of 46 of the top 50 players in the world.

The field reads like a who’s who of world golf, with only Tiger, Rickie and Francesco reneging on their invitations, and so we can look forward to another high-quality shootout in completely contrasting conditions this week.

It’s going to be hot, dry and lacking in humidity in Memphis, and that is ground on which many will be more comfortable in this particular field.

There’s trees too – relief for some – and a complete u-turn from the Links of the past few weeks.

Mind you, there aren’t too many defenses to this Ron Pritchard design other than the small, fast Bermuda greens, which have been sun baked and dried by the wind too. It will take some laser irons or short game mastery to get the job done this week.

Playing as a Par 70 at 7,244 yards, there’s plenty of water and a Sawgrass-like island Par 3 for the players to negotiate, but there’s nothing here that they will find particularly troubling.

Par 4 scoring will be the key factor, as will the ability to produce some chipping magic around the greens when these small surfaces are missed.

With that in mind, who features on our WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational sleeper shortlist?

WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational Fantasy Sleeper Report

Brandt Snedeker – 70/1 – It’s at tracks such as TPC Southwind where Snedeker’s mesmeric short game tends to come to the fore, and so we’re willing to put our money where our mouth is with him this week.

He finished T6 here a year ago – no major surprise there, and with some good recent form in the bank there’s no reason why a repeat, or better, isn’t on the cards.

T4 at the Canadian Open, T5 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and T19 at the Charles Schwab Challenge are all on the docket in recent times, and while he missed the cut at Royal Portrush he did so on the number.

Nine time PGA TOUR winners are rarely far from the radar, and Snedeker is front and center this week.

Danny Willett – 80/1 – The Englishman was a missed putt on eighteen away from setting the course record at Royal Portrush over the weekend.

That suggests that he is approaching the sort of form that saw him win the Masters what feels like a lifetime ago, and that is also backed up by his recent formline: T6 at the British Open, T8 at the Canadian and T12 in the US Open is all excellent stuff.

Players who may be fragile of confidence love no-cut events, and so Willett will have plenty of time to settle in and show his class here.

Kevin Kisner – 80/1 – One of the classiest operators on the PGA TOUR seems to be rounding up into some kind of form.

Kiser’s win in the WGC Match Play wasn’t exactly the watershed moment many expected it to be, but he has still been playing much better of late with T15 at the Travelers Championship and T30 at the British Open obvious highlights.

He is the kind of player that can grind out a winning score on a Par 70 track as you would expect from someone ranking 36th on Tour for Par 4 Scoring Average, and if that putter heats up he could deliver plenty of red numbers on his card.

Alex Noren – 100/1 – The floundering of Alex Noren has taken many by surprise, particularly as the Swede is widely considered one of the best European Tour graduates of recent years.

A ten-time winner on that Tour, Noren hasn’t translated that form into success Stateside even if he has the class to do exactly that.

At the heart of his game is a fantastic touch and feel around the greens, and with confidence enhanced as his form improves – T11 at the British Open last time out – that could come to the fore once again here.

Keegan Bradley – 125/1 – This is the sort of classic golf course where a tee-to-green merchant like Keegan Bradley can thrive, and if his slight improvement with the putter continues then who knows where that can lead.

You might remember when he won the BMW Championship out of nowhere at the tailend of last season, and that came about because he found something with the putter to go with his outstanding ball striking.

There’s been bits and pieces of form of late, and T2 at the Travelers Championship is an indication that something more substantial, i.e. trophy shaped and shiny, could be on the horizon.
