Fred Couples Calls Mickelson a “Nutbag” and Sergio a “Clown”
Recently, 2013 World Golf Hall of Fame member Fred Couples had some choice words to say about two fellow Masters Champions.
Couples said expressed frustration with “all these other clowns, like Sergio (Garcia)” for their comments about PGA Tour officials before making the jump to LIV Golf.
Needless to say, Fred has been consistent with his negative viewpoint over the past months toward the LIV Golf Tour:
“If you’re giving Phil Mickelson $200 million at age 52 to shoot 74 and 75, God bless you.”
One could argue a fair point there that Phil made a great personal decision to take the large payout as his career was winding down, but on the other hand he left and didn’t defend the PGA Championship.
To all my friends who I missed birthdays & weddings …… so sorry, I was busy earning a living on the @pgatour and in my line of work the goal is to EARN your way to work weekends. And by weekends i mean 72 holes. Sorry not sorry .

Fred Couples doubled-down on his take towards Phil Mickelson, referring to him recently as a “nutbag,” but did admit, he is probably one of the 10 best players that ever played and made mention he still likes Phil. It’s hard to overlook the impressive career of Mickelson including 45 PGA Tour wins and 6 majors.
Couple’s reference of Sergio Garcia being a “clown” was largely in reference towards how Garcia had acted towards a PGA Tour Official before jumping ship to LIV. Not to mention him withdrawing from the BMW Championship to only attend Texas/Alabama college football without citing a reason for the withdrawal. As a result, Sergio was fined for his actions.
When Fred was asked if LIV will survive he said:
“I’m being flippy now; I don’t really care if it survives.”
