Free Membership for Ground Crew? One Course Is Testing Out the Arrangement

A nine-hole golf course in the United Kingdom is testing out an interesting concept: free access to the course in exchange for getting your hands dirty.

That’s right, instead of being paid in pounds, Hollyville golf course owner Nick Cotterill-Waring is all about the barter system: come work on the grounds crew, then enjoy the fruits of your labor by teeing off on the course.

The course dates back to the 19th century and had fallen into some disrepair in recent years. The land was about to be purchased by a real estate developer, but Cotterill-Waring stepped in.

Cotterill-Waring told the Saddleworth Independent:

“It concerned me who was going to look after it in the future; it could end up a real eyesore.”

But he said his money will only go so far, as he can’t afford to keep the course in the condition he would like on his own.

Cotterill-Waring explained:

“If I spent every penny I had, unfortunately, I wouldn’t make a dent in the maintenance work… I need help from the community to restore it to its former glory; in return, I’m happy for people to come up and have a round on the course. They can come here, bring their [buddies] and enjoy a few hours knowing a ball about.”

So there ya have it, and who knows? Maybe this will become a trend that makes its way to the U.S. and becomes a way to lower your golf budget!
