Gary Player said in a recent interview that both he and Jack Nicklaus were offered money by LIV Golf in what could have been an effort to end the division between it and the PGA TOUR.

Player is one of the more polarizing personalities in golf in terms of the golfers from past decades, but he recently revealed that he was potentially used as a pawn in the game of chess being played between LIV and the PGA TOUR.

Player said to Bunkered:

“There is a lot of money, and quite honestly, I’m not adverse to playing for a lot of money…[LIV is] giving Jon Rahm $540 million. I think that’s excessive. It’s just my opinion…”Somebody would say, ‘Well, Gary would like to have that.’ Well, I was offered money too – in a different capacity – and I turned it down. Nicklaus was offered money. Tiger was offered money. We turned it down because we had a dream and an appreciation for what the PGA [Tour] did for us.”

Loyalty has kept many players from accepting massive sums of money from LIV. Tiger Woods was offered $1 billion, while Rory McIlroy was rumored to be offered $750 million in what would have been a completely unexpected move.

However, it seems many players and past legends of the PGA TOUR were unwilling to ditch it due to what it had done for their careers.

It just takes more than money sometimes.
