When-Where-and-How-to-Get-Fitted-for-Golf-Clubs

Golf is a hard game.  Of course, you already knew that.  But the fact remains that golf is notorious for being one of the most difficult sports to play, despite the fact that you don’t have to run or jump along the way.

The difficulty of golf is found in the skills that it demands – if you don’t have the right skills, there is little you can do to post a good score.

While there is nothing you can do to take away the challenge of this game, you can work on assembling the right set of equipment to make the game a little bit easier.

Make no mistake – no piece of equipment on the market today is going to make golf easy.  This will remain a hard game even if you have the best set of clubs money can buy.  However, carrying the right clubs does make things easier, if only because you won’t have to fight against your equipment while you are fighting against the course.

Club Fitting is Helpful for All Golfers

When we talk about having the right set of clubs, it doesn’t have anything to do with how much you are willing to spend.  There are quality golf clubs available at a variety of price points.  Rather, the key here is to have clubs that fit you and your swing.

Club fitting has become incredibly popular in recent years, and for good reason.  With the advances seen in golf technology, it is now possible to analyze the swing of the average player right down to the smallest detail.  If you are serious about your golf game, a club fitting should be something that sits near the top of your priority list.

There is no need to worry about ‘finding the right time’ to go for a fitting – it’s always the right time.  At the very least, a fitting session could confirm that you are already using a perfect set for your game.

Being told that you are on track from an equipment perspective will be a boost to your confidence, although it is more likely that the fitting will reveal the need for at least a couple changes.

Whatever the outcome of your fitting session happens to be, you can rest assured your game will be better for the effort.

Where to Go for a Club Fitting

Most golf facilities today offer club fitting services.  Nearly any golf shop you can find in your area will have a club fitter on staff, and many golf courses do as well.

To locate facilities near you which offer fitting, you will only need to spend a few minutes with your favorite search engine.  Enter the phrase ‘golf club fitting [city]’ – with the word ‘city’ replaced with your location, of course – and check out the results.  Most likely, you will see a list of worthy options for your club fitting session.

Once you have picked out two or three possibilities, give them each a call and ask for club fitting details.  Be sure to ask the following questions:

  • How much do they charge for a fitting session?
  • What is included for that fee?
  • If the fitting is “free” are you obligated to purchase the clubs?

If you are planning to buy new clubs right away, some facilities will offer to refund the fee for the session if you make a purchase over a certain dollar amount.

In addition to getting information on pricing, you should also ask about the professional who will be working with you during the fitting.  What is his or her experience?  Golf shops will generally only employ individuals who are well-qualified for this job, but it never hurts to double check before you make an appointment.

Get the Most Out of Your Club Fitting Session

If you have never before been fitted for golf clubs, the process can be a bit intimidating at first.  You will be watched by at least one camera, if not more, and your swing will be analyzed by a powerful computer.  With all this attention focused on you and your swing, you may be tempted to ‘impress’ the computer by swinging as hard as possible.  This is a common phenomenon in the club fitting world, and it always detracts from the point of the process.

Think about it this way – you are getting fitted for clubs to make sure your equipment will work properly out on the course.  However, if you use a swing during your fitting session which is different from your usual swing, the results of the fitting will be skewed.  You won’t be accurately representing your on-course game, meaning the equipment decisions based on the fitting data will not be as accurate as they should be.

So what can do you?  It’s simple – just be yourself.

Don’t try to maximize your swing speed while testing, and don’t be self-conscious about hitting shots in front of the pro.  No one is going to be judging you during the process. The fitting professional has probably completed hundreds or thousands of these sessions, and he or she has seen plenty of golfers both better and worse than you.  Forget about making any impressions or anything like that – just relax, have fun with the process, and learn as much about your game as possible.

Don’t Wait Any Longer

A professional club fitting is the kind of thing that is easy to put off month after month until another golf season has come and gone.  Don’t make that mistake – going through a fitting and making equipment adjustments as needed can help your game as soon as your very next round.

Given the fact that most fitting sessions are modest in price and take less than an hour, there is no need to put this off any longer.  Take some time in the near future to contact some of your local golf facilities to find out about their fitting services.  Once the fitting is complete, use the information you have been provided to assemble a set of clubs which will give you the best possible chance of playing good golf.

Now go have fun and good luck!
