This week, golf lost a great man in PGA Pro Justin Riegel. Riegel, 38, was the club pro as well as the PGA Director of Golf at Philmont Country Club outside of Philadelphia.

Rigel also spent his time as an assistant professional at two other golf clubs as well as working with a number of committees in Philadelphia, including the chair of the Philadelphia Golf Assistants Organization. Riegel was also named the Section PGA Assistant Golf Professional of the Year in 2015.

The tragedy struck this week when a violent thunderstorm crashed into Philly this week. The storm came in quickly and the course was promptly evacuated. Riegel was tasked with bringing all the carts back into the clubhouse. While he was rounding up the carts, a tree unexpectedly was uprooted, crashing into the clubhouse and collapsing the cart garage where Riegel was at the time.

The most devastating part of this story is that Riegel is survived by his loving mother and girlfriend. Riegel and his girlfriend were also expecting their first child. “Justin was one the most caring individuals you could ever come across. He was that guy who would call just to see how you’re doing and make sure everything was great in your life,” a GoFundMe for the family states.

“We’re raising funds to help Kate and the kids get through these awful times and to start a college fund for the kids. Please consider donating as much as you can, Justin would be the first one signing up to help anyone else out.”

The story is truly heartbreaking and comes at a time where so many people are already hurting. It’s certainly a tough time for all people right now in the U.S. and across the world, but if anyone is willing and able to help Riegel’s family and child the link to the GoFundMe page can be found here. As of the writing of this article, the page has raised an incredible $327,000.

Our thoughts go out to the entire Riegel family as they deal with this tragic and terrible event. And here’s to hoping that the kindness of people around the world will be able to help this family in their darkest time.
