Golf Courses Set to Open Across America this Weekend

Typically, if you want to go play 18 holes in February, you have to travel south or west where it’s warm and no snow covering the course.  This weekend will be an anomaly, however, as courses across the north will be open for golfers to play.

Courses in Wisconsin and Iowa specifically will be opening up this weekend with unusually high temperatures warming up the country to perfect golf temperatures.  In Wisconsin, temperatures will hit the mid to upper 50s while Iowa will have areas that come close to reaching 70 degrees.

“This is the earliest we’ve been open for at least 10 years.”

The biggest challenges for the courses that are set to open up for the first time in 2017 is drainage.  While the high temperatures will be perfect for golfers to play, the snow that has been on the courses will be melting rapidly, creating a wet playing surface that will obviously affect any players game.  The courses that will be open, however, were specifically chosen because of the extra sand in the soil that improves drainage.

Despite the challenges that these courses face, many people are excited to see golf back so soon.  “This is the earliest we’ve been open for at least 10 years,” said Greg Gilg, the general manager at the Burlington Golf Club in Iowa, “We are just excited to have people back out here.”

Even though courses will be open for the weekend, golfers shouldn’t expect them to stay open for the rest of the season just yet.  While the temperatures are at record highs for some of these areas, it is still winter and these States will almost certainly see snow and freezing temps before spring hits.

So if you’ve been itching to get a round of golf in, this weekend could be the best opportunity you have for at least a few weeks and should be taken advantage of.
