R&A Exec Sends STERN Message to Greg Norman Regarding Open Championship Attendance

Greg Norman has won the Open Championship twice but that does not mean he will be welcome with open arms to the tournament.

R&A Director of Corporate Communications Mike Woodcock said yesterday during a media scrum for the final Major Championship of the Year that Norman should check “the resale platform or hospitality” for a ticket.

“He’s very welcome to look there.”

Norman has not been treated kindly since he assumed his role as LIV Golf’s CEO, and it appears even the tournaments he has won are not willing to give him an open invitation.

It was reported earlier this month, and then confirmed by his son, that Norman bought tickets to the 88th Master’s Tournament. Having never won the Green Jacket, Norman was among the spectators at the event, not receiving any special treatment.

However, it is surprising to hear that the Two-Time Major Champion and seven-time runner-up at the other three Majors, is not even welcome at a tournament he’s won twice.

Woodcock said during the scrum yesterday that Norman had not yet bought a ticket:

“I don’t think there’s a G. Norman [on the list]. I think they would have let me know if there was. So I’m not aware that he’s bought a ticket so far.”

Norman had plans to compete in the 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews two years ago, but the R&A stopped that from happening.

The Australian responded by saying the move was “petty”:

“I would have thought the R&A would have stayed above it all given their position in world golf. It’s petty, as all I have done is prompt and grow the game of golf globally, on and off the golf course, for more than four decades.”

LIV Golf is in Singapore this week after a tournament in Adelaide, Australia, last weekend.
