A popular adage states: it’s not what you make; it’s what you save.

After picking up the second-largest payday of his career in finishing tied for third at The Players Championship on Sunday, Tom Hoge headed back to his home state of Texas from north Florida like so many other trips to the Sunshine State end—in coach.

While Hoge was able to save a little bit by flying commercial, he did have to change two earlier flights out of Jacksonville.

After shooting an opening-round 78 on Thursday, Hoge booked a flight home on Friday afternoon.

Hoge’s 68 on Friday kept him close enough to the cut line to where he moved his flight from Friday afternoon to Saturday.

The second round finished up on Saturday morning. Eric Cole’s birdie putt on 18 missed, keeping the cut at +2 instead of moving it to +1, and after changing his flight again, Hoge came out playing with house money on Saturday and took full advantage of it.

Nine men had shot a 63 on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass to share the course record, but Hoge now stands alone with a 62. He then carded a two-under 70 on Sunday to finish tied with Viktor Hovland for third place.

The $1.475 million payday was second only to Hoge’s win at The American Express in 2022, where he won $1.5 million.

Hoge said Sunday:

“The (third-round) 62 stands out, but honestly battling today and battling Friday in tougher conditions when the wind was up, and really playing pretty nicely, was right there with it. I booked a flight home Thursday night, so I certainly wasn’t expecting to be here.”

It was Hoge’s third top-five of the year, which doesn’t include his win with Sahith Theegala at the QBE Shootout last December, which is an unofficial money event on the PGA Tour.
