HONEYMOONED: Rickie Fowler WDs from Mayakoba Due To Bacterial Infection

For Rickie Fowler, it has been one whirlwind of a month. He has experienced the happiest moment of his life but also has dealt with some big professional blows. But now a freak occurrence has threatened to affect Fowler’s game.

Ricke, who remains a popular player on the PGA TOUR despite never notching a major championship, hasn’t played a round of professional golf since the Tour Championship. He’s supposed to be playing this week in the Mayakoba Classic after some heavy off-time but that won’t be happening anymore. Fowler withdrew this week, claiming he did not have enough time to train.

The reason that he’s not in shape for the tournament is because of a bacterial infection that Fowler picked up a few weeks ago. To be specific, Fowler contracted Campylobacter jejuni, a rather common infection that leads to fevers, cramps, and diarrhea. Those are definitely not things that you want to be dealing with on the golf course and since it was only a few days ago that Fowler shook the infection, he’s certainly not up to the task of playing so quickly.

For the positive side of things, Fowler reportedly contracted the infection while on a tropical honeymoon with his new wife. Fowler was off for so long because he was getting married in October and then jetting off on that honeymoon. I’m sure that Rickie never expected that his time to celebrate life with his new wife would result in him having to withdraw from a tournament but rather now than later in the season I suppose.

While just missing the Mayakoba Classic doesn’t sound like a big deal, Rickie’s layoff could have bigger consequences. While Rickie wasn’t picked for the Presidents Cup team, Tiger Woods has indicated that he would have been the next choice. Now, Brooks Koepka is dealing with a knee injury that could force him out of the Presidents Cup, opening a spot for Fowler. The only question would be if Ricke would have played enough in order to be in shape.

Only time will tell if Koepka is forced out of the Presidents Cup but that bacterial infection could have a major impact on Fowler’s ability to replace him. Regardless, it’s good to see that Rickie is over the infection now and we’re hoping he can get back on the course asap.
