Hurricane Dorian Wreaks Havoc On Abaco Golf Club

Unless you’ve been completely unaware of what is happening in the world for the past week, you know that Hurricane Dorian is causing major damage in the Caribbean and now the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. And that has obviously affected some golf courses.

The hardest-hit area in Dorian’s path has been the Bahamas, where the hurricane struck as a Category 5 with the highest ever recorded winds on land. At 225 mph, those winds destroyed much of the islands in its path including the Abaco Island. Abaco is the home of a Korn Ferry Tour stop, the Great Abaco Classic, at the Abaco Club.

The Abaco Club was certainly affected by the storm but the damage there was relatively minor compared to the rest of the island. In fact, the club isn’t even that worried about the damage on their golf course, they’re actually concerned about their own workers who would repair the course because they still aren’t all accounted for. There are many missing on the island, along with the rest of the Bahamas where the death toll is currently at 30 but expected to rise.

So the Abaco Club is doing what it can to help out all residents of Abaco Island. “The Abaco Club on Winding Bay is acting to provide urgent and immediate assistance to the people of Great Abaco Island,” according to their GoFundMe page. “We know that there are many people who hold this special island in their hearts, and now it is our turn to show the people of Abaco how loved they are in return. It is an urgent and dire situation. Every minute and every dollar counts.”

That GoFundMe has been a major success so far. As of this writing, the page has raised just shy of $900,000 with a goal of raising $3 million to help all affected in the area. The best part is that none of this money will be used to repair the golf club as they believe the damage they suffered was manageable. So if you feel inclined, we would recommend donating whatever you can to help out the island.

With Dorian still going up the East Coast, there is still much potential for increased damage and casualties. We ask all in the path of the hurricane to remain safe and all affected are in our thoughts as the storm moves through.
