A little over a year ago, the PGA Tour announced the debut of the Myrtle Beach Classic, to be hosted by the Dunes Golf and Beach Club. While some may groan about another stroke-play event being added to the bloated PGA Tour calendar, what made the Myrtle Beach Classic unique from nearly every other event on the calendar is the pre-event.

Specifically, “The Q at Myrtle Beach”, an 18-hole competition that would pit eight YouTubers—former Good Good members Luke Kwon, Garrett Clark and Micah Morris, Fat Perez (Bob Does Sports), George Bryan (Bryan Bros), Peter Finch, Cole Lantz (BustaJack) and Dan Rapaport (Barstool ForePlay)—against eight professional golfers.

After two eagles, some lost balls, and a playoff hole, Matt Atkins—a professional golfer with six seasons on the Korn Ferry Tour, including a win at the 2017 Mexico Championship and 25 PGA Tour starts, came home victorious and will be receiving a sponsor exemption to the first ever Myrtle Beach Classic.

As for the rest of the field, George Bryan really showed up, carrying a lead of four under into the 18th hole. Unfortunately, a short pitch into the green got away from George and trickled into the greenside water hazard, forcing a 19th-hole playoff between Atkins and Bryan.

The rest of the field came in as follows:

  • Tyler Watts (-1);
  • Scott Stevens (E);
  • Jay Card (E)
  • Peter Finch (+1);
  • Turk Pettit (+1);
  • Morgan Deneen (+2);
  • Dan Rapaport (+4);
  • Ryan Wilkinson (+4);
  • Jamie Wilson (+5);
  • Luke Kwon (+6);
  • Grant Horvat (+7);
  • Fat Perez (+9);
  • Cole Lantz (+11); and
  • Micah Morris (+14).

The full 2 1/2 hour video covers most of the shots for each golfer throughout the round, and the big takeaway is that while the YouTube golfers who competed are certainly talented, there’s a difference between playing for views and laughs and the competition golfers. Indeed, the most tested golfers—George Bryan, who’s played professionally in the 2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship and is brother to PGA Tour Winner, Wesley Bryan, and Peter Finch, who frequently makes an annual run at The Open qualifying—clearly showed that they had the mettle to compete alongside guys who, simply put, compete for a living.

Conversely, some of the YouTube golfers showed that their games weren’t ready. Not to single anyone out, Micah—who got an eagle later in the round—was 10 over after six holes. And that is, perhaps, the biggest takeaway here. The truly skilled guys separated themselves by never making back-to-back bad shots and, instead, found a way to grind (even from behind a tree and in the pine straw) to scramble and salvage some parts.

The Myrtle Beach Classic is less than a month away (May 9th through 12th), so a lot of pressure will be on Matt Atkins to show that his admissions weren’t a fluke and, ideally, that the “The Q at Myrtle Beach” deserves an encore next year (if not being incorporated at other PGA Tour events).
