J.T. Poston Explains 18th Approach Shot: ‘Not Out Here to Finish 2nd’

J.T. Poston stood on the 18th tee at Twin Cities, needing a double bogey or better to wrap up a solo second finish at the 3M Open. The payout was $850,000.

A rogue drive took him to the water’s edge going into 18, where he was going for the green in two. A seven wraps up a solo second, and an eagle three forces a playoff.

His ball sailed off a rock and back into the water, eventually missing a short putt for a double bogey and carding an 8. He was reminded of his costly error on Twitter a few hours later, where he replied:

“Not out here to finish 2nd. Trying to win. Would make that decision 10 times out of 10 under circumstances.”

You have to respect the game! He lost $260,000 on the hole, dropping from solo second to a tie for second amongst Martin Laird and Kevin Streelman. I guess he had his eyes on the prize…
