Sadly, even having the perfect ingredients doesn’t guarantee a perfect recipe.  Case and point: Jason Day and caddie Steve Williams.

After just six events on the PGA Tour, Day confirmed that Williams, who’s most well-known for caddying for Tiger Woods’ between 1999 and 2011, will no longer be on his bag.  The announcement comes right off Day’s disappointing performance at THE NORTHERN TRUST at Liberty National Golf Course.

Day cited a “disconnect” between the two, but that it “was a mutual decision and not an easy one to make.”  Day further commented on Williams’ professionalism, stating, “[h]e is the ultimate pro; it was a real learning experience being exposed to a caddie who has achieved what Steve has.  He has worked with the best.”

The announcement is particularly surprising in light of the fact that Day sought Williams’ counsel to help Day right the ship after announcing that he hired Williams to help him “flourish” after “severely underachiev[ing].”  While the two seemed to be heading in the right direction, with Day finishing T-21 at the U.S. Open and T-8 at the Travelers Championship, Day continued to struggle.

Day is currently 50th in the FedEx Cup standings, meaning he’ll need to really need to step up at the BMW Championship to make it to the season finale at East Lake.  Additionally, Day doesn’t appear to be a likely International team member, with approximately one week before the automatic Presidents Cup picks are announced, particularly after Abraham Ancer’s second-place finish at THE NORTHERN TRUST secured him a spot on the International Team (in addition to making history, with Ancer being the first first Mexican to play in the Presidents Cup).

Day will have friend and fellow pro David Lutterus on the bag in Chicago later this week at the BMW Championship (August 15-18, 2019), which is being held at Medinah Country Club.
