Jim Furyk, Thomas Bjorn Recreate Arnold Palmer’s Famous Eiffel Tower Shot
The Presidents Cup just finished up a few weeks ago but that doesn’t mean that the hype isn’t already building for the 2018 Ryder Cup. And that hype train landed in Paris this week.
Today marks the One-Year-to-Go date to when the Ryder Cup will tee off in France and that means that both team captains were in France for a quick visit. The team captains for 2018 are Jim Furyk for the U.S. and Thomas Bjorn for the European squad.
Players obviously haven’t been announced yet but both captains enjoyed touring the tournament’s host country. And while they were there, both decided to recreate some history.
It’s impossible to go to France and not visit the Eiffel Tower, as it is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. While Furyk and Bjorn were there, however, they decided to do something that hasn’t been done since 1976…hit golf balls off of Paris’ biggest monument.
Furyk and Bjorn each hit a shot off the Eiffel Tower to a landing area in the park below. The only other golfer to do this? Arnold Palmer.

Bjorn cherished the experience, stating, “It feels like we have had a long list of unique experiences these past two days, but hitting balls off the Eiffel Tower was pretty special. I saw that picture of Arnold Palmer a while ago, and so to recreate that for the Ryder Cup, and for France, shows how big the Ryder Cup is and how France is really getting behind it.”
Palmer was the first to hit a shot off the Tower when he was visiting as part of the 1976 Ryder Cup team. The picture is so iconic that it is often one of the first pictures you’ll see when researching Palmer.

The golf legend died earlier this year and has had several tributes from tournaments and players alike. This Ryder Cup tribute to his historic shot, however, is somehow even more special.
Recreating Palmer’s shot off the Eiffel Tower certainly has many golf fans excited about the Ryder Cup even though it’s a full year away. Regardless of how far away the event is though, fans from both teams are now anxiously waiting for a real tee off in France.
