John Daly is one of golf’s all-time characters.

When he burst onto the scene in the 1990s, he generated huge crowds, hit the ball a mile, and often showed off his ability to make the game look easy without much practice.

He famously threw golf clubs into the ocean at Pebble Beach. He drank like a fish, smoked like a chimney, and gambled like a degenerate. His words, with some paraphrasing from the Wolf of Wall Street.

Speaking of that film, Jonah Hill is set to embody our beloved Daly in an upcoming film about the golfer’s life. I wonder if they’ll mention the $55,000,000 lost at the roulette tables?

That’s right. Golf Digest has reported that the $55m total is legit. Graham Bensinger sat down with the legend at his home in Arkansas, going through some of the tales of serious financial loss. Between the years 1991 and 2007, he was averaging a steady loss of more than $3m a year. Of course, there are some highlights.

One incident saw him lose $1.65m at a slot machine in Vegas after he lost to Tiger in a playoff at Harding Park.

Among the lows, there have been highs, including two majors at the 1991 PGA and 1995 Open Championship. The film is truly an exciting prospect; it will be interesting to see how deep they delve into the man behind the golfer.
