Johnny Miller Considering Hanging Up The Microphone
Though all of the major events and moments that golf has endured over the past several decades, there have been iconic voices to bring them to us. Now one of those voices may be heading for retirement.
Johnny Miller has brought his broadcasting insight to the game of golf for almost 30 years. His voice is indistinguishable among a golf broadcast on NBC but the legend may be calling it quits in February once his current contract runs out.
Miller had this to say about his potential retirement: “It’s been 50 years on the road, and part of me is saying, ‘That’s enough. I haven’t gotten to that point yet. They’re still trying to convince me to keep going. So we’ll see. I usually listen to my gut, so to speak, and my wife. Right now, I am planning on scaling down even more. We’ll see what happens. Maybe I will say, ‘Hey, one more year.’”

While Miller is leaving the door open to continue his broadcasting career with NBC, it sure seems like he’s leaning towards retirement. If he does go in that direction, golf will be losing a voice that has been in the business for almost half a century. Those will be very big shoes to fill and a hard job to pick up for whoever was to take his place.
Regardless of if he does retire in February or not, Miller is still going to call some of the biggest events in golf to end this year and swing into the beginning of 2019.
With NBC, he will call the FedExCup playoffs as well as the Ryder Cup in Paris. Following that, Miller will be on the mic for a few more tournaments in the new year until his contract runs out at the end of the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
No matter what Miller decides to do, it will be a sad day for golf fans realizing that he’s at the end of the line. But whenever he steps down, we’ll always have the memories of the remarkable calls he made during some of the most important moments in golf.
