Tony Romo has made more golf headlines this year than he had in the NFL, his former sport, and now the amateur is making more. And these headlines seem to point into a pro career for Romo.

The CBS NFL announcer and guest golf analyst is set to tee off this week at the Texas Lantana Golf Club in a competition that could earn him a card membership to the Web.com Tour. Many had speculated that Romo would possibly pursue a professional golf career after his retirement and his participation in this event looks to confirm that.

A player ahead of Romo signed his scorecard incorrectly, which disqualified him, allowing Romo to secure a top 36 spot to advance.  Could you imagine?

Romo isn’t a stranger to professional golf events, attempting to qualify for the U.S. Open for the past several years but falling short. Romo also played in the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship, a PGA TOUR event on a sponsor’s exemption. The results were pretty awful, however, as Romo finished dead last at that event.

Don’t let the numbers fool you, however, as Romo carries an extremely low handicap and has been destroying the competition on the amateur circuit since his dud appearance with the pros. He’ll have to show that dominance this week if he wants to earn one of the fist-stage spots he’s seeking against a field of 68 others.

Oddly enough, Romo has been on the edge of professional status for years but has declined it at every turn, saying he’s happy as an amateur. This was backed up earlier this year when he won a pro-am but refused to take the prize money because it would have given him professional status. Now attempting to qualify for the Web.com Tour seems to indicate he’s had a change of heart.

There are still many questions about how Romo would juggle a professional golf life with his commitments to broadcasting Sunday and Thursday football games for CBS. That seems like something to discuss if the time comes, however, and until then we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on Romo’s golf progress.
