We have seen a lot of collapses from former top PGA TOUR golfers over the past several years but one that seems to have gone unnoticed is Hunter Mahan’s drop. Now, Mahan is looking to resurrect his career.

Mahan is a name that we should all know if you were a golf fan for the past decade. He’s won six different tournaments as a professional, finished in the top ten of every major at one point, made over $30 million, and participated on seven Ryder Cup and President Cup teams. Mahan was once ranked as high as fourth in the world by the world golf rankings but fell off just a year ago.

After the 2017 U.S. Open, Mahan fell to 859th ranked in the world and had to play in the Web.com Tour finals to try and keep his PGA TOUR card. After failing to do so, Mahan was left to play in events that he had former winner exemptions for. Playing well this year, however, Mahan earned his way back into the Web.com Tour finals and was able to gain one of the 25 PGA TOUR cards offered during the events.

When asked about the reason for his sudden dropoff, Mahan stated that he believes he had trouble adjusting to having a family and being a professional golfer. “We have a lot going on,” Mahan said. “Mentally, you’d like to deal with one thing at a time. I think it overwhelmed me and I lost track of my swing a little bit. It feels like an avalanche, but it’s just a snow flurry. I’m a father and a husband, and I have to be there first. It’s hard to be there mentally in both places.”

While he hasn’t won an event or even finished in the top ten of a PGA TOUR tournament since 2015, there is a lot pointing in Mahan’s favor. For one, he played much better this season and almost won the Barbasol Championship back in July and finished runner-up at the DAP Championship during the Web.com Finals.

Mahan has been around awhile but he’s still only 36 and showing that he still has a lot left in the tank. Hopefully, with his PGA TOUR future secure, Mahan can return to the prominence he once had.
