Emotional Jon Rahm Captures First LIV Golf Title: ‘It Hasn’t Been the Easiest Year for Our Family’

An emotional Jon Rahm captured his first LIV Golf title in the United Kingdom this past weekend, retribution for the Spaniard’s difficult year so far.

Rahm explained that the tears after his victory was realized are a culmination of a few things, some of which occurred off the course at home:

“It’s just emotional. It hasn’t been the easiest year for our family. Kelley and I have gone through quite a bit, and she has gone through even more, being on bedrest among many other things. She did tell me, our son Kepa said to bring a trophy home in this stretch of golf, and I started to believe it was going to happen at one point today. Maybe not in the last 20 minutes. But at least I can look at them and say I’m bringing one home for them.”

Rahm, who notoriously ditched the PGA TOUR last year for LIV in December, has struggled since leaving the TOUR. After a dominant year last year where only he and Scottie Scheffler had any argument for being the best players in the world, Rahm took his talents to LIV.

But LIV has not been friendly to Rahm. He has had several noted blowups and his lackluster performances in the combined fields this year, apart from The Open — T45 at The Masters, a missed cut at the PGA, WD at the U.S. Open due to injury, and T7 at The Open — have made things difficult.

In the grand scheme of things, Rahm has not played badly. However, it’s just not the Jon Rahm we are used to seeing on a weekly basis. His track record on LIV has been good, as he finished in the Top 10 in all seven LIV starts, according to Golf.com.

For him, it’s a breakthrough victory:

“Finally got one done. You never want to get those feelings to go on for too long, and to get over the hump feels incredible. It’s been a fantastic week and a fantastic year, and just relieved that it happened.”
