Jon Rahm Nails Xander Schauffele’s Ball with Approach Shot
During their play yesterday, Jon Rahm and Xander Schauffele had one of those situations where they were so in tune, they were hitting the ball in the same exact spot. And when I say that, I mean it literally.
Playing in the opening round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open yesterday, one of Rahm’s approach shots collided with Schauffele’s that was already on the green, literally landing right on top of it.
As cool as that is, it unfortunately didn’t help out either golfer in this situation. Schauffele’s ball was situated about six feet from the cup for a solid birdie opportunity. As for Rahm, he hit a beautiful approach shot from 100 yards out that was looking to be a similar putt. But, once Rahm’s ball collided with Schauffele’s, both rolled off the green, a long way away from the hole.
Jon Rahm’s approach cannons into Schauffele’s ball at Waste Management
SUBSCRIBE to PGA TOUR now: http://pgat.us/vBxcZSh In the opening round of the 2018 Waste Management Phoenix Open, Jon Rahm’s 91-yard approach lands directly on Xander Schauffele’s ball, causing both balls to ricochet on the par-4 2nd hole. This highlight is delivered by PGA TOUR LIVE.
It was a bad break for both but a little less so for Schauffele. According to the PGA rule, Schauffele is able to place his ball back in the general proximity of where it was originally stopped. Rahm, on the other hand, was forced to play his shot from where the ball ended up after hitting Schauffele’s.
All the fireworks really didn’t matter all that much in the long run, however, as both players ended up with par on the hole.
For the tournament, both players are in contention but could certainly have used the birdies that they likely would have made without the ball collision. Rahm finished the opening round at four under, just outside the top ten, and Schauffele finished three under, which was just outside the top 20.
It’s always a sight to see when something so unique happens on the golf course but in this case, it ended up hurting both players. So next time this happens to you, if it does, just know that it also happens to the best golfers in the world.
