JUST IN: Johnson Wagner Ties an Absurd PGA TOUR Record

One of the most exciting moments on a golf course is when you’re able to hole out from the fairway or on a long-putt. It’s an exhilarating feeling that keeps you coming back. For Johnson Wagner, that may becoming a bit more normalized.

Wagner certainly isn’t a household name on the PGA TOUR, but he has been around for a good while. In his years on the PGA TOUR, he’s had the opportunity to tie one of the oddest records in golf. After this week, Wagner tied the record for the most albatrosses recorded on the PGA TOUR. For those who didn’t know, the record is at 3 for a player’s career.

Wagner was able to tie that mark this week at the RSM Classic when he holed out after hitting a 3-wood 255 yards into the 15th hole green. That was the third for Wagner, the other two coming at the 2010 Sanderson Farms Championship and the 2017 Wyndham Championship. On top of that, Wagner also has a fourth albatross from his time on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Wagner told the Golf Channel after his round that it’s more luck than anything. “Front pin, love that pin,” Wagner said. “After I hit the tee shot I just wanted to make sure I could give it a go because it’s an eagle pin. I had to hit it as hard as I could. As soon as it came off I knew it was going to be good. It hit just short, took a nice bounce, then we saw it hit the stick and disappear. It was awesome.”

The stat can be made even more ridiculous when you add some other numbers to it. For example, Wagner now has as many albatrosses on the PGA TOUR as he does victories. That’s mighty impressive for the near 40-year-old, even though I’d imagine he would prefer more wins. For now, he’ll settle with the shared PGA TOUR record that he now holds with Tim Petrovic.

Wagner is off to a good start at the RSM Classic after the albatross helped him to an opening-round 67.  Even if he isn’t able to pull off a win this week, that albatross record will be in his sights for the next few years. Here’s to hoping he breaks it.
