In a year that has represented a power shift in golf, many young players like Justin Thomas have stepped into the spotlight. While some early studs have faded away as the season progressed, Thomas has continued to dominate.

After starting his year with a 59 in January, Thomas has progressed throughout the season and that progression helped Thomas capture his first major championship when he won the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow a few weeks ago. While that would likely be the peak of a player’s season, Thomas isn’t done making noise this golf season.

Competing in the Dell Technologies Championship, one of the FedExCup playoff events, Thomas set a record for most 3’s carded in a single FedExCup round. While the FedExCup hasn’t been around nearly as long as other major golf events, this is still a remarkable feat. In his third round on Sunday, Thomas was able to card a ridiculous 12 3’s on his 18-hole round. That was good for a score 63 and put him in a tie for first the tournament.

Even after firing off a great round, Thomas was actually a little disappointed for not doing a little better. “It’s crazy to think I did that,” Thomas said, “and parred all the par 5s. Played them even-par. That’s a little bit of a bummer, if I could have somehow had a downside to the day. But I’m obviously extremely pleased and put myself in great position to win the tournament.”

The win at the Dell Technologies Championship puts Thomas in second place in the FedExCup standings, meaning a win at the final event would guarantee him the $10 million grand prize. And while he’s playing so well, who would bet against him? As Andre Iguodala tweeted on Sunday, Thomas was looking like he could make more three’s than Steph Curry.

Winning the FedExCup would be a huge exclamation point for Thomas’ season and would be a huge momentum shift for the U.S. heading into the President’s Cup. Hopefully, Thomas will be able to keep the good times rolling next week.
