LIV Golf revealed on Wednesday that it’s taking the next step in its evolution, hoping that it will lead to inclusion in the Official World Golf Rankings and bring a franchise/team model to the sport of golf.

Announced in a recent press release, the LIV Golf League will begin in 2023 with a set 48-man field that will compete in each tournament. There will be 12 established team franchises that will also play in these tournaments, along with individual honors. It hasn’t been announced whether these will be 54- or 72-hole events, and it’s presumed that there will be no cuts.

The schedule will be released at a later date, but LIV said the events will be played across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and Asia. The 14 events will carry a total prize purse of $405 million.

In addition, the LIV Golf International Series will expand from eight to 11 events and will give opportunities to other golfers to be promoted to the LIV Golf League for the following year. The league says there will be promotions and relegations in order to keep the teams and league itself competitive.

Greg Norman, CEO and Commissioner of LIV Golf, said:

“LIV Golf’s expanding global platform will add a new dimension to the golf ecosystem as we know it, one that provides an opportunity for players and fans around the world to help maximize our beloved sport’s true potential… Our franchise model will bring new energy and excitement to fans from all corners of the world, establishing a league of teams to connect and grow with. The International Series will attract new talent and offer unprecedented pathways that develop the next generation of stars. LIV Golf is committed to making sustainable investments that grow the game now and for the future, and we are proud to turn these dreams into a reality.”

Norman went on to say that no LIV events will go head-to-head with the majors, international team events, or heritage events in the hopes that “the best players in the game will always be able to make their own choices about where to play.”

The third event of the eight-tournament LIV schedule for 2022 takes place this weekend at Bedminster in New Jersey.
