LIV Golf’s Ian Poulter: We’ll Get OWGR Points Once It’s Too Late

Ian Poulter has been one of LIV Golf’s more outspoken members, so it should come as no surprise that the Englishman had a take on the series’ quest to get Official World Golf Ranking points.

Poulter, who filed a legal challenge to play in the Scottish Open—a joint event between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour—last year, held a Q&A session on Instagram following LIV’s event in Singapore last week, and the topic of OWGR points came up.

In fact, Poulter—along with Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, and Richard Bland—officially resigned from the DP World Tour, which will make them ineligible for the Ryder Cup.

During Monday’s Q&A, a fan asked Poulter if he would ever play the Masters again, to which he responded:

“It’s not looking likely as we don’t have World Ranking points on @livgolf_league.”

Poulter went on to explain that he believes LIV will eventually play for ranking points, but once the series is approved, it won’t matter:

“The powers that be will allow us points once everyone is outside the Top 300 so we won’t be playing for any.”

What he means by that is that if those in the LIV Golf fields are mostly ranked outside the top 300 in the OWGR, the points that they will receive for events will be minuscule in comparison to those issued on the PGA Tour or DP World Tour.

Theoretically, this would keep LIV players who weren’t already eligible from automatically qualifying for majors.
