Local Legends: New Orleans’ Haunted Golf Courses

Have you heard about the haunted golf course in New Orleans?

Located in the heart of the city, City Park is home to two golf courses, Bayou Oaks North and South. Operating across the street from each other, the South Course often gets more play as it is kept in much better shape than the North course. While most tourists tend to play the South course, locals flock to the North course in the evening to practice, taking advantage of its’ lit double-decker driving range.

Some locals tend to avoid the two courses altogether when the sun goes down.

According to local legend, the golf courses are home to several spirits, including a former groundskeeper who haunts the clubhouse and a ghostly golfer who can still be seen swinging his club, watching over the 18th green. There have also been reports of strange noises, sudden temperature changes, and other paranormal activity on the golf courses.

Locals claim ghosts take to the courses to recreate an event in the early 1960s where a woman golfer was murdered while playing the 18th hole. Although an arrest was made, it is said that police were never able to find out why she was shot. Adding to the mystery, the son of one of the investigating officers was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, nearly 20 years later on the very same green where the woman had been killed.

Despite its reputation as a haunted location, City Park Golf Course remains a popular spot for golfers and paranormal enthusiasts alike. Golf in City Park dates back to 1899, and spirited folklore has been passed down ever since. If you’re in town looking for a round of golf at a solid public course, (and not afraid of paranormal activity) check out Bayou Oaks South. If you’re looking to fit in a twilight nine-hole round before dinner, the North Course may be enough to scratch your golf itch.

So if you’re feeling brave, grab your clubs and head to one of City Park’s Golf Courses for a round of golf with a side of paranormal activity. Who knows – you may just have a ghostly encounter of your own. Just be sure to keep an eye out for any phantom golfers on the course.
