Luke Donald has been named the next European Ryder Cup Captain for Italy 2023.

In a statement via Twitter, Donald said he was excited and ‘truly honored’ by the selection, acknowledging that he has only 14 months to prepare the team for Rome.

It is perhaps ironic that the former captain, Henrik Stenson, secured the individual win at the LIV event in New Jersey last night, bagging $4.375 million. He has certainly made his statement on the new tour, perhaps fuelled by anger or disappointment at the result of his defection is that he lost the Ryder Cup captaincy.

Would Stenson trade the winnings for the chance to resume his position? Almost definitely. The money must have a certain emptiness to it. In this particular scenario, Donald has been called in to grab a bucket and steady the ship after Stenson jumped to save himself.

As a player, Donald was ruthlessly consistent, owner of an aesthetic swing, and the prettiest iron shots on Tour. He was also a killer in the Ryder Cup, going unbeaten in his four appearances for his continent. He also delivered the first crucial point in the Medinah comeback in 2012, taking down a flamboyant Bubba Watson the year he pulled on his first green jacket. That alone carries enough clout to garner respect from the players representing in 2023.

As a captain, I expect a more back-seated approach than that of Ballesteros or Olazabal, but a strong team of vice captains around him will be able to mold the team as Donald wishes. He is still a regular on Tour, so picking players on form will make sense. Now that the announcement has been made official, the incoming talent stream among the younger European players will be queueing up to impress Donald.

A rocky start for Team Europe, but hopefully, the excitement ramps up as we approach the next transatlantic duel in 2023!
