Make Your Golf Equipment Dreams a Reality with True Spec
Playing Through: True Spec is capable of making the unimaginable a reality. Despite the fact that my dream irons were discntinued nearly 10 years ago, True Spec’s experienced fitter was able to conduct a shaft-only fitting that allowed us to still optimize performance—distance, dispersion, descent angle, spin, etc. As a result, my “outdated” dream irons are now in the bag and helping me play my very best golf (and with an ear-to-ear smile on my face).
We’re all familiar with this old adage: never meet your heroes, because they’ll surely disappoint. But what if this wasn’t acceptable; what if, despite all the cautionary tales, you were committed to playing your “hero” golf club, like those Mizuno MPs from college or those Nike VR Pros that Tiger Woods gamed starting in the early 2000s (and ultimately paved the way for Artisan Golf).
The obvious problem with committing to this path is that your “hero” equipment probably isn’t in the club matrix at your custom-club fitter/builder. In fact, there’s a good chance that your fitter hasn’t even worked with that particular club.
Fortunately, by working with True Spec, you can alleviate these very concerns and, ultimately, put in play customized versions of those dream clubs you’ve always wanted to play.

Since its founding in 2014, True Spec Golf has become one of the most reputable brand-agnostic club fitters and builders. With over 43 locations worldwide (including Liberty National, Pine Needles, and the Floridian), in addition to pop-up and mobile cart fitting locations globally, True Spec is able to assist golfers around the world. And because True Spec carries all the major brands (Callaway, Titleist, TaylorMade, and PXG), as well as some niche ones (Miura, Gimar, and Autoflex), it’s all but guaranteed that your perfect fit is somewhere in their more than 70,000 head and shaft combinations.
But unlike most other fitters, True Spec won’t limit their fits to whatever clubs happen to be in their fitter’s tool chest at any given time. On the contrary, True Spec openly invites golfers to do retro-fits for heads or shafts only. To explain, if there’s a set of iron heads that need shafts for or, instead, a driver shaft that you refuse to part with, True Spec won’t force you to replace these components. Instead, True Spec will assist you with identifying a performance-optimized setup to complete the build. Or, in the case here, True Spec will make sure that meeting with your hero is an experience you’ll remember—and enjoy—for a lifetime.

My long-time golf equipment “hero” has been a set of Miura CB57 irons. When I first got into golf, I heard the Miura name worshipped like religion. That their forging process, combined with Katsuhiro Miura’s attention to detail and precision, made their irons the best—the best looking, feeling, and performing. Miura’s forgings were so special, in fact, that they were rumored to be the behind-the-scenes maker of Tiger’s irons (anyone remember that limited edition run of Miura-forged Titleist 681T irons?).
The first problem in this story is that before I could put the CB57s in my bag, Miura discontinued them in place of other newer models. While I’m sure these newer models were equally well-made, the CB57s still held a special place in my heart. While I proceeded to play other irons, I continued to search (and research) the internet and golf forums over the years until I finally discovered a complete set of Miura CB57 iron heads that, luckily, weren’t abused by the prior owner.
So now that I had the irons, a new problem instantly revealed itself: what shafts should I pair with the iron heads?
This, indeed, was that “don’t meet your hero” moment because the easy option was just swapping the Miura heads onto the shafts in my other irons. But the reality is that I’d essentially be guessing that this was a performance-optimized setup. And I, truthfully, wasn’t ready to risk a guess-based build my dream irons only to be disappointed by the lack of performance.
True Spec, fortunately, was up to the challenge and, simply put, over-delivered.

The process started by arranging a “Shaft Only” fitting at the True Spec NYC Grand Central location with Master Club Fitter Bo Gorman. When the day arrived, I made my way into the city with two things: my current gamer 6-iron and the CB57 6-iron clubhead. The fitting process started like expected—I stretched and warmed up while Bo reviewed some ball flight data—but with one added step. Specifically, Bo began to investigate the CB57 specs (head weight, loft, sole width, blade length, etc.) so he could identify the most comparable iron head in his fitting matrix to test with. After digesting all of this information, Bo not only knew how my current setup performed but also—and more importantly—how to make the Miuras perform better.
Bo immediately determined that my current irons (a similarly styled single-piece forged cavity back) were flying too low and with too little spin—a ball flight that makes holding greens a real challenge. So Bo immediately went to work finding a variety of shafts—steel and, for the first time, graphite—that would increase my peak height, descent angle, and spin rates.
After trying numerous options (with some immediately being rejected and others being tested and re-tested) and Bo soliciting my feedback on weight and feel, we went over the data, and Bo recommended what he believed to be the “right” shaft. After agreeing, we confirmed the build specs (shaft length, swing weight, loft and lie, and grip of choice), and mailed the CB57 6-iron head to True Spec’s Scottsdale Build Shop.

Within a few weeks, the newly built 6-iron was sent back to Bo at the Grand Central location so we could hop back on the launch monitor and confirm we got the build right. And sure enough, it performed exactly like Bo envisioned. In addition to gains in carry distance over my now-former iron, the CB57 now generated a higher peak ball height, with increased spin and steeper descent angle, coupled with a significant improvement in dispersion. In sum, the Miuras performed exactly like they should: the ball stopped when it landed at the intended target.
After hitting a few balls, I provided Bo with the rest of the Miura iron heads so they could be immediately mailed out to the build shop to be built in the exact same manner. The shafts were each PURE’d, the Miuras lofts and lies were adjusted, and Golf Pride grips were installed. True Spec, indeed, even went as far as accosting my request to build the irons with Bbandfco Ferrules wanted to incorporate into the build.
Since the full set arrived, every round comes with the Christmas morning excitement. Each and every time I load my back onto the cart or stand it next to the tee box, I smile when I see the iron heads spin around and admire the Miura logo. And that smile is quickly overshadowed by the one that appears on my face after pouring a tee ball on a par-3 or fairway approach shot on par-4s or 5s.
After the True Spec Shaft-Only / Retrobuild, I am scoring lower and having more fun—regardless of whether I’m on the course or practice. And that’s all because, with Bo’s help, I was able to “meet” my golfing hero and consistently walk away with a pleasurable and memorable experience.
So rather than just drooling over your favorite club head or shafts and thinking, “What if,” find your local True Spec and schedule your Shaft Only Fitting and make that long dreamt build a reality. And the best part: just like an all-new build, your retro build is covered by True Spec’s Performance Guarantee, in addition to lifetime loft and lie adjustments (which could quickly be performed at your local True Spec location).
