Mark Hubbard, PGA Tour player was not driving the ball well and was missing fairways to his disliking. So Hubbard took it into his own hands to put a second driver in his bag.

This would have been okay if he only started the round with 13 clubs, however he started with 14 clubs. For a refresher on Hubbard, he proposed to his eventual wife on the 18th hole at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Back to the story, Hubbard recounted his thoughts to a Tour Media Official about the whole scenario. Hubbard explained that he began his round with one driver, but he wasn’t getting the type of spin he desired. As a result of a slew of missed fairways for Hubbard, he took action into his own hands by adding a second driver at the turn (back nine).

The specific rule states this: “When a player becomes aware during a round that he or she is in breach of Rule 4.1b(1), (2) or (3) for having more than 14 clubs or for making a stroke with another player’s club, the player must immediately take an action that clearly indicates each club that is being taken out of play.”

It makes you wonder why the combination of caddy and player aren’t aware of these rules to work as a team to prevent this from happening. At the least ask a rules official and how you should proceed instead of assuming what the penalty might be.
