As the past few years have taught us, drama seems to follow Rory McIlroy around.

With clutch wins, agonizing losses, and memorable moments in between, the Northern Irishman is one of the most entertaining and polarizing golfers in the sport.

But on Thursday, McIlroy couldn’t have controlled what happened to him on his approach shot at the DP World Tour’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in England.

Not only did the head of McIlroy’s 8-iron fly off, but it went out in a blaze of glory – a dart that set up a successful birdie putt. The instance was one that brought up memories of a recent club malfunction with Matt Fitzpatrick, who fell victim to a ridiculous rules violation during the BMW Championship of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Matt Fitzpatrick Driver Ruling a ‘Disgrace’ after Cracked Club Can’t Be Replaced

After hitting a drive, Fitzpatrick noticed a crack in his driver's face. PGA TOUR rules officials noted that it was not significant enough to warrant a club replacement.

Fitzpatrick, one of McIlroy’s Ryder Cup teammates also played this past weekend, and weighed in on social media.

McIlroy went through the rest of his round without an 8-iron available, but he was able to get it back into his bag for round two.

McIlroy talked about the shot that broke his club:

“I hit, and you know, obviously you're expecting the weight of the club to just pull through and there was nothing there. Thankfully the ball went where I wanted it to. It could have been a lot worse but thankfully got it repaired and it should be okay to go.”

McIlroy finished runner-up to Billy Horschel after a three-way playoff between the two and Thriston Lawrence.
