Matthew Wolff Just Made an Unbelievable Jump in the World Golf Rankings
There has been a lot of hype on the PGA TOUR this year for players returning to their former glory and some guys beginning to make a name for themselves. But one player you may want to keep an eye on moving forward is Matthew Wolff.
If you don’t know who he is, Wolff is the reigning NCAA Singles Champion after playing the year as a sophomore at Oklahoma State. In his time there, Wolff won six different individual events and has been tabbed as one of the best, if not the best, young golfer to hit the PGA TOUR.
And that hype is only going to get bigger after his first PGA TOUR win at the 3M Open this past weekend.
What makes the win even more impressive was that it was only Wolff’s third event played since he turned professional.
Even though he was never the top-ranked amateur player in the world (fellow youngster Viktor Hovland owns that title), he’s still seen as perhaps the best young golfer to go pro since Rory McIlroy. And the golf world is beginning to see him back up all of that potential.
After the big win, Wolff made an unheard of jump in the Official World Golf Rankings. He moved all the way up from the 1,659th spot to no. 135 this week.
For those who aren’t fast with a little mental math, that amounts to a jump of 1,524 spots. Only Michael Arnaud has moved up more in one week since the rankings were implemented, jumping 1,529 spots last year after a win on the Korn Ferry Tour.
The other thing that might catch your eye when you watch Wolff play is that he has a pretty unusual swing. He quickly adjusts his body to his target and then rips a big swing that sees the club go almost perpendicular to the ground over his head. Many golf teachers, such as Brian Manzella, actually see the swing as something that will be a lot more prevalent in future golfers and one that allows Wolff to hit the ball extremely far with great accuracy.

It’s unknown whether or not Wolff will end up being the next big thing on the PGA TOUR but this win is certainly a great start to his young career. He will certainly be a guy to keep your eyes on moving forward into the next couple years to see how good he really can be.
