PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan held a press conference ahead of the Tour Championship in Atlanta on Tuesday, giving a bit of an update on where things stand with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) as the sides work to try and reach a definitive deal after the “framework agreement” was made on June 6.

Monahan said at East Lake Golf Club, home of this weekend’s final tournament of the 2022-23 season:

“We’re confident that we’re going to reach a positive outcome for the PGA Tour.”

He was then asked if he thought there was any reason a deal wouldn’t be reached by the self-imposed deadline of the end of the year.

“At this point, no, I don’t have any reason to think that we won’t be successful,” the commissioner responded.

Monahan shared that talks between the sides take place at least weekly, and there’s an urgency from both sides to get the deal completed.

He was asked if a path back for ex-PGA Tour players who are now on the LIV circuit is among the items being discussed. While he didn’t give a lot of details, Monahan said that has been a point of discussion.

Monahan added:

“These are the kind of topics and discussions that we’re having right now with PIF. So to be able to project what’s going to happen, I don’t have an answer today, and when we complete our discussions, we’ll have an answer for that question. That’s a non-answer, but that’s my position.”

Monahan said that the PGA Tour is not negotiating with anyone else as a backup plan to secure funding in case the PIF deal falls through. He added, however, that the Dec. 31 deadline can be extended if the sides are close to a deal.
