Nacho Elvira Gets Lucky Break
All of us have one golf shot that we can point to that should have never happened. Those once in a lifetime shots keep us coming back to the course and one just happened to Nacho Elvira.
Outside of having one of the coolest names ever, Elvira is a Spaniard who is a regular on the European Tour. In fact, Elvira is actually a four-time winner in Europe, at the prime age of 30. Heading into this weekend, Elvira is looking for his fifth victory on the Euro Tour at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa. And Nacho got one of the luckiest breaks that anyone could ever have.
The shot happened at the Par 5, ninth hole. Taking the approach shot onto the ninth’s green is tricky because there is a water hazard right below the safety of the green. Taking his third shot towards the front pin placement, Nacho’s shot came in a little too hot and was heading straight for the water. But to save his round, a rock that was sticking up in front of the water acted as a backboard for Nacho’s ball, sending it back to the green.

We’ve all heard of balls skipping over water or catching a blade of grass before heading into the pond but a rock bouncing a ball back is a new one. The announcers have dubbed it the “break of the century” and for good reason. Thanks in part to that rock, Nacho was able to put together a strong round that has him sitting just three shots back of the lead.
Ahead of Elvira are a few other European regulars, led by Bernd Wiesberger who held a one-shot lead after Thursday’s first round. There are four players that are sitting behind Wiesberger, Victor Dubuisson, Scott Jamieson and Julian Suri, and Branden Grace. But with the luck that Elvira is having so far, we’re certainly not counting him out of this tournament at three shots back.
With Elvira’s luck and the strong competition brewing in South Africa, the Nedbank Golf Challenge is gearing up to be a great tournament. But no matter who ends up taking home the trophy, the real winner in our book is that little piece of rock that’s helping keep rounds alive.
