When you think of Bill Murray and golf, the first thing that should pop into your mind is the movie “Caddyshack.” But Murray also has his own golf apparel company, which has him in hot water right now.

Murray’s been a big golfer most of his life, and has even participated in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am every year since 2017. Murray has now taken it a step further, by creating his own golf apparel company with his brothers called William Murray golf apparel.

If you’ve heard of William Murray golf apparel, it’s possible that you’ve seen some of Bill’s commercials advertising their products. The apparel William Murray sells is pretty flashy. It’s certainly not as flashy as John Daly’s “Loudmouth” apparel, but it brings back vibes of what guys were wearing back in 70s and 80s. But it’s the advertising that the company is doing that has Bill in legal trouble.

According to legal documents, Murray and his company are being sued by the Doobie Brothers for allegedly using their song “Listen to the Music” without the permission of the band. These types of suits have been coming forward a lot more recently and the William Murray golf apparel company is just the latest to face court proceedings. And according to the Doobie Brothers’ lawyer, Peter Paterno, Murray has used other music from other bands without their permission.

While this appears to be a really serious matter, Paterno is using a lot of sarcasm to confront Murray. In a letter to Bill and the company, he said, “This is the part where I’m supposed to cite the United States Copyright Act, excoriate you for not complying with some subparagraph that I’m too lazy to look up and threaten you with eternal damnation for doing so. But you already earned that with those Garfield movies.”

It’s certainly going to be interesting to see how this legal situation plays out and how it affects William Murray golf apparel going forward. But just in case they take a big hit, you may want to buy what you can now.
