Angel Cabrera, winner of the 2009 Masters was not present at Tuesday’s Champions dinner. He will also not be participating in the tournament this week.

Instead of being present at the dinner, as is customary for prior winners of the Masters, Cabrera is locked up in a jail cell, thousands of miles away in Brazil.

Cabrera, who has been in pretty frequent trouble with the law, was arrested in early January in Rio De Janeiro.

Previously, Cabrera had been told by law enforcement in Argentina to notify them any time he wanted to travel internationally, due to ongoing investigations regarding domestic violence allegations brought against him. Cabrera left the country right before he was to stand trial in one of the domestic abuse cases, which triggered a Red Notice, alerting police that Cabrera was attempting to evade justice by leaving the country.

According to the official Interpol website, a Red Notice “is a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.” It’s this Red Notice that eventually led to his arrest in January.

It remains unclear at this time when he’ll be extradited back to his home country of Argentina to stand trial. Cabrera’s lawyer maintains that Cabrera is innocent, regardless of the domestic abuse allegations brought against him by multiple women.

“He is not a serial abuser,” Cabrera’s lawyer Carlos Hairabedian said. “He is not the monster they have consistently tried to portray him as in the media.”

Naturally, Cabrera is not a favorite to win this week, nor was he ever. Whatever you do, we would advise against putting your money on him.

Tiger Woods and Jackie Burke Jr. were the only other living past champions not in attendance.
