NFL and NBA Stars to Compete in Ryder Cup Style Tournament
All golf fans love the Ryder Cup, as it gets national pride pumping in our veins and provides unparalleled team-play excitement. Now, golf is applying that same model to a charity event.
It’s no secret that plenty of NFL and NBA players use golf as an escape from their other professional sport careers. Many compete in pro-ams and in charity tournaments, and some players from each league have actually played in PGA sanctioned tournaments with pro golfers.
Now the stars of the NBA and NFL will be able to battle in their own tournament to see which is superior in golf, all in Ryder Cup fashion.
Each league will have their own teams that will compete in a match play tournament just like the Ryder Cup. Each squad already has their captains picked out as well, with the NFL team being captained by star quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the NBA team being captained by all-star point guard Chris Paul.
The tournament will benefit charity and take place June 27-28 at the Mohegan Sun Golf Club in Baltic, Connecticut.

Both captains look ready for the battle they’ll have ahead. “While the NFL and NBA are home to many of the greatest athletes in the world, a golf course is an entirely different battlefield,” Rodgers said. Paul shared his excitement for the competition as well, stating “Competitiveness is essential in our respective sports and I look forward to competing alongside and against the best athletes while raising money for charity.”
Paul is technically the one who put this together but it was founded and sponsored by Turner Sports and CAA Sports. And because its a Turner Sports event, fans will actually get to see the taped event on TV this coming August 10th. The show will be a one hour presentation of the highlights of the tournament that will air at the conclusion of the second round of the PGA Championship.
Applying this style to a charity event will definitely generate excitement, and we won’t even try to guess which team will come out victorious. We’ll just have to wait until August and see how it all turns out.
