Nick Bienz is the next name on the PGA TOUR you’re going to want to pay attention to. The Golf Galaxy employee works full-time and needed three beers to kill the nerves as he patiently waited to confirm that he qualified for this weekend’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Bienz is the classic golf story that everyone loves to hear. When he’s not working, he’s taking full advantage of his facility, playing on the TrackMan bays at his Golf Galaxy location while practicing short game at his local course when he’s off the clock. But he never imagined that his practice could take him where he’s headed.

After playing in a local qualifier at The Orchards Golf Club in Michigan, Bienz shot 65 and learned that he would be joining the PGA TOUR field at the Rocket Mortgage:

Bienz shot a -4 at the pre-qualifier on June 20 at Fieldstone Golf Club in Auburn Hills before firing the -7 65 during the Monday qualifier. Three others qualified for the event with the same score after a five-for-four playoff.

His win means he is exempt from all pre-qualifiers for the rest of the year, but that is the least of his concerns. Bienz is from Indiana and will be spending the week in Michigan:

“I didn’t even pack clothes for this week. Every time I’d go to a Monday for a Korn Ferry Event, I used to pack like eight days’ worth of clothes, never made it through, so now I’ve gone to the strategy of pack just enough for the Monday and we’ll figure it out if we need to.”

Bienz will tee it up with a field of PGA TOUR superstars like Rickie Fowler, who won the event last year, Will Zalatoris, Akshay Bhatia, Min Woo Lee, and Tom Kim.
