OLYMPICS: Rory McIlroy ‘Very Impressed’ with Simone Biles

Rory McIlroy has always been an open book. Seemingly anything is on the table when it comes to asking him questions, and because of that, we’ve gotten to know Rors more than maybe any player on Tour. After his opening round in Japan, he was asked about Simone Biles.

If you’re unaware, which seems impossible at this point, Simone Biles withdrew from Olympic competition to focus on her mental well-being. Everyone on the planet had something to say about her withdrawing, and to be honest, I was pretty disgusted at some of the things that were said about her.

“Disgrace to the country.” “You’re not doing this for you, you’re doing this for America.”

All said by people who have a hard time getting off the couch at night.

Mental health is more important than any event. Any competition. And the greatest athletes in the world know this better than anyone.

“Just as I thought Naomi Osaka was right to do what she did at the French Open and take that time off and get herself in the right place, I 100% percent agree with what Simone is doing as well. I mean, you have to put yourself in the best position physically and mentally to be at your best and if you don’t feel like you’re at that or you’re in that position then you’re going to have to make those decisions, and I’m certainly very impressed with especially those two women to do what they did and put themselves first.” – Rory McIlroy

Rors couldn’t be more right. I don’t think people truly understand how much Simone carried into this Olympics. She was the face of these games, and had the entire country on her back. I couldn’t even begin to imagine what that is like.

To Simone – you just set an incredible example for every young athlete around the world that what’s happening on the inside is much more important than what you can do on the outside.

I grew up in southern New Hampshire, where I first fell in love with the game of golf. I started by just going out and messing around with my buddies and focusing purely on having a good time! I never took golf seriously until I moved down to Tampa, FL to attend the University of South Florida. Go Bulls! At the start of my junior year I got a job working as a cart boy at a local private country club. This is when I started to focus on golf becoming my career. During the fall of my senior year, I turned from a 14 handicap, to a 2. I passed the PAT scoring test my first try and haven't looked back.
