It’s never easy predicting the winner of a golf tournament, let alone one that contains only the top 68 golfers in the world. Despite losing one of our fantasy picks to injury (Jason Day), our 6 remaining picks still managed to fight off tough conditions at Doral to post a total fantasy earnings of $1,519,750 for the week.   With this week’s tournament in the books, our fantasy gurus have now racked up a total of $12,279,489 in fantasy earnings in the 10 tournaments played in 2014.

We received a lot of questions in our inbox this week wondering why we chose to overlook both Tiger and Phil in this event. The short answer is that we spotted a recent trend in both of their games, making us concerned about their overall chances heading into the week.

On the other side of that coin, the late additions of Bubba Watson and Hunter Mahan quickly emerged as solid picks, earning our Premium Members more points and money in their leagues this week.  So with another big week it’s safe to say that if you’ve been a Golficity Premium Member since the beginning of the year, odds are you’re lighting things up in your fantasy leagues.

It’s not unusual seeing a player hold the trophy at Doral wearing black pants, a red shirt, and a black hat.  Although this time, Tiger Woods wasn’t that player, as similarly-dressed Patrick Reed was the one claiming victory on a daunting new golf course. After the newly renovated Blue Monster chewed players up during Round 2, Patrick Reed’s name emerged on the leaderboard, taking over heading into Rounds 3 and 4. Reed, now the youngest player to the WGC-Cadillac Championship, is sitting pretty in 3rd place on the FedExCup leaderboard just 8 points behind Dustin Johnson.  If he can pull off another win, Reed would easily jump over FedExCup leader Jimmy Walker.

It’s really impressive seeing Reed win his 3rd tournament since August, and with this win, he certainly is in contention for a Ryder Cup bid this year. Reed and Walker are early front-runners along with Dustin Johnson to be a part of the USA Team. There is however plenty of golf left in 2014 and momentum changes are certain to appear with the majors kicking off starting next month.

Strong wind, tough greens and multiple water hazards left players carding high 70’s and low 80’s rounds most of the weekend. Tiger Woods in particular couldn’t seem to find that steady groove that lead him to so many past victories here at Doral. Although he looked solid Saturday, firing a 3rd round 66, Tiger fell back out of contention Sunday, ultimately posting 78 to finish at +5.   We’re not sure what to expect from Tiger going forward, and may even have to look past him for the Masters, but it is still too early to tell.

With only three players even coming in under par in this week’s WGC-Cadillac (proving that they are human indeed) here’s something else that might make you feel better about your own game: the World No. 3 golfer Henrik Stenson shanked a ball during round one, sending it directly into the gallery.  Even the pros play like us every once and a while!
