PEACE OUT: Davis Love III Leaves CBS Suddenly
It’s been roughly a year since CBS decided to move on from long time golf analyst Gary McCord. Back at the time, McCord was hot about the issue and claimed that CBS was looking for someone to bring a new perspective to the game. CBS thought they had landed their replacement when they secured Davis Love III as McCord’s replacement but now, Love is leaving the network after less than 8 months on the job.
Love submitted his letter of resignation suddenly this week, citing that he did not feel like he was up to the demands of the job. One of the reasons that Love says he decided to leave the broadcast booth so quickly was because the time off due to the COVID-19 outbreak showed him how much more he values time with his family. Love also expressed a desire to play more.
Love issued a specific statement regarding his resignation. “Since golf returned in June, CBS has allowed me time to focus on my family, play a few tournaments, and bring some stability back in a difficult year,” Love said in the statement. “I have realized in this time my passion to play is still strong, and my heart yearns to be home…Beginning next week at the PGA Championship my focus returns to playing, and supporting my family.”
Based on the statement, it seems like Love is actually more focused on the desire to play than not being to handle the job. Being on the job only 8 months, half of it during the PGA’s COVID layoff, it’s hard to believe Love got a large taste of the actual demands of the job. As for where Love will focus on playing, one has to imagine he’s thinking about becoming a more prominent member of the Senior Tour again and perhaps playing in some of the PGA TOUR events.
There’s no report or speculation on who could now replace Love on the CBS team at this time so that will be something to watch out for, especially with the major season just on the horizon.
