PGA Championship Entry List Revealed: Woods & Garcia Both Out

The PGA of America revealed the entry list for next week’s PGA Championship, and some of golf’s biggest names this century are not a part of the festivities at Oak Hill in Rochester, New York, next week.

One is Tiger Woods. That’s not a surprise, given that he underwent surgery after injuring his foot and ankle at the Masters last month.

The other notable omission is Sergio Garcia.

The Spaniard has been eligible for every major since the 1999 Open Championship—and the only one he missed in that span was the COVID-delayed 2020 Masters.

But with LIV Golf not receiving Official World Golf Ranking points for its events, Garcia has dropped to No. 189 in the OWGR list despite losing in a playoff to Talor Gooch in LIV’s most recent tournament.

Garcia had a five-year exemption into the majors for winning the 2017 Masters, but that has run out.

Another long majors eligibility streak that has come to an end thanks to LIV is Louis Oosthuizen. The 2010 Open Championship winner was eligible for every major since the 2009 Open until now. It was just two years ago that the South African finished in the top-3 in three majors.

The 155-man field contains all of the top 100-ranked golfers except for No. 9 Will Zalatoris, who is out for the year while recovering from back surgery.

The PGA of America, which runs the year’s second major, has the ability to extend special invitations. Garcia, however, did not receive one.

The only LIV player who got a special invitation was Paul Casey. He finished fourth in the 2021 PGA Championship but didn’t play in last year’s due to a back injury.

In all, 18 LIV Golf members are in the field next week, including Phil Mickelson (2021 PGA Championship winner), Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Cameron Smith, and Patrick Reed.
