PGA Tour Players Will Be Allowed to Play in LIV Golf Qualifying Event
It was made clear in June 2022 that any PGA Tour player who “put a tee in the ground”–famously uttered by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan–would face consequences.
Those consequences turned out to be an indefinite ban on the PGA Tour.
But that stance has softened a bit–at least for LIV Golf’s qualifying event next month.
The PGA Tour confirmed to Golf Channel that a PGA Tour player can compete in the 72-hole tournament, which is taking place Dec. 8-10 in the United Arab Emirates.
“Based on the information publicly available regarding the LIV Golf Promotion event, it is determined to be a qualifying event only and not a part of an unauthorized series. Therefore, the LIV Golf Promotion event is not categorized as an ‘Unauthorized Tournament.’ This classification is subject to change should the details of the event change, the statement said.
The interesting part will be to see what will happen if a PGA Tour player qualifies, since the top-three finishers in the tournament will be eligible to join the LIV Golf series in 2024.

Of course, this is also contingent on whether the framework agreement among the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF)–the financial backers behind LIV–goes forward and becomes an official agreement. If that happens, expect more cooperation between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.
The current deadline for a deal to go through is Dec. 31.
