PGA TOUR Veteran Says Money Needs to Be Left Out of Commentary: ‘People Don’t Want to Know’

A PGA TOUR Veteran has had enough with commentators talking about money.

Billy Horschel believes PGA TOUR fans do not want to hear about how much money players are making because “it makes them feel even smaller.”

Horschel, who won the FedEx Cup in 2014, won $10,000,000. Last year, the tournament purse swelled, and winner Viktor Hovland won $18,000,000:

However, Horschel believes commentators make too much of the money aspect of the game, and pleads with commentators to stop talking about financials (via Smylie Show):

“I hate talking about the financials of it. I despise it, honestly. For many years now, I’ve told the tour, especially at the Tour Championship, that we need to tell TV to stop talking about how much money the FedEx Cup winner gets because I know people don’t want to know about the millions of dollars they make.”

Horschel would have to understand that removing the financial implications of the professional ranks would mean a lot more than just stopping commentators from talking about it. Golf is surrounded by money; it’s a big reason why Rolex, Richard Mille, NetJets, and other high-end brands advertise so heavily during events.

To be frank, it feels like Horschel might be disconnected from the fan here. While money is not a main driver for viewership, there is a reason notable golf sites, including ours, post how much the winner of each tournament gets every single week.

Simply put, people absolutely care about the money and winnings. They care about the luxury and the lifestyle, and they care about what golfers are taking home weekly.

Horschel has won $39.2 million on TOUR, according to his profile on the PGA TOUR’s website.
