PGA TOUR: Will DJ’s Knee Surgery Keep Him from Pres Cup?

Now that basically all of the most important events are done for the PGA TOUR season, this is about the time of year when players begin to reveal injuries they’ve played through and some even opt for surgery. One of the players going down that route is one of the best in the game.

It was revealed on Thursday that Dustin Johnson elected to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his knee. The procedure was done on Thursday in Florida to repair some cartilage damage in his left knee. Johnson underwent the same exact procedure on his right knee back in 2011 so this isn’t anything new for the world’s #3 golfer.

Johnson’s agent David Winkle broke the news today and reported that the surgery was a success. According to Winkle, DJ is resting at home and expects to make a full recovery. For those of you worried about his playing status, DJ’s procedure was only a minor one to clean up tissue. He’s anticipating to be back and golfer as soon as later this fall and set for the President’s Cup.

Even though the surgery is minor and there’s no indication that his knee affected him at all this season, people are sure to speculate if that’s why Johnson had a relatively down year this season. Many will point to the last eight starts of the season that DJ had, where his finish was tying for 20th and say that the knee could have been the cause.

If Johnson’s knee was bothering him with cartilage, however, there probably would have been effects much earlier. But even in a down year, DJ still managed to win two events in 2019 and he finished as a runner-up at the Masters and at the PGA Championship. So despite the medical procedure, I’m sure Johnson was good to go for all of last year, he just disappointed relative to his crazy expectations.

DJ has even been doing his part to help with hurricane Dorian relief for the Bahamas. Johnson did just turn 35 so it is possible that his health is starting to catch up to him. But as long as he’s on the golf course next year, he’ll still be considered a favorite in most events, surgery or not.
