Next to the Majors, THE PLAYERS is one of the most popular, high profile, and competitive events on the PGA TOUR calendar.

Whether it’s the bragging rights of conquering TPC Sawgrass, winning the “Fifth Major,” or the money—THE PLAYERS is currently offers the highest prize fund of any golf tournament, Majors included—being a PLAYERS Champion is a prestigious honor.

While this normally is one of the most celebrated weekends in golf, either for being a fan-favorite event or the unofficial start of golf season for the seasonally-affected parts of the U.S., the ongoing dispute between the Super Golf League (SGL) and PGA TOUR appears to be leaking into everything.

While the above video appears to celebrate THE PLAYERS Champions, conspicuously absent is Greg Norman (1994)—who still holds the tournament scoring record (264)—and Phil Mickelson (2007).  Rather than skipping over these years, Nick Faldo and Vijay Singh are inexplicably inserted into those years.

The knee jerk reaction here is that Norman and Mickelson both invited this, as both are avid and open supporters of the SGL, which was planning on crashing THE PLAYERS by announcing its player lineup this weekend. And while that will still happen remains to be seen, it appears that the PGA TOUR isn’t taking the matter lightly as they are subtly erasing Norman and Mickelson from the history of THE PLAYERS.

You have to ask yourself, “Is the PGA TOUR taking this too far?”

It will be very interesting if the PGA TOUR will continue to erase SGL supporters’ accomplishments from other events, such as the PGA Championship that Mickelson won last year.
