The biggest news of the day coming out of the US Open was what people were calling “the biggest meltdown in US Open History”.

On the 13th hole, Phil Mickelson putt his ball and it missed to the right of the hole, and as the ball was slowing down, he realized it was going to go down the slope and off the green so he ran over to hit and hit it again towards the hole.

You could hear in the background, fans were saying “what is he doing” and “you can’t do that”

No you can’t do that. Mickelson’s decision resulted in a two stroke penalty, which was actually what he wanted rather than letting the ball roll off the green.

“I know it is a two shot penalty… I just didn’t feel like going back and forth and hitting the same shot over and I took the two shot penalty and moved on. ”

Phil on if it was going to roll off the green, ” No question… it was going to go down into the same spot behind the bunker… I knew it was a two shot penalty and I tried to hit it close to the hole so I could make the next one.”

Then, on top of this he missed the shot after he hit the ball again back towards the hole.

Before his putt, he was already going for bogey. This hole was already not going as planned, so he was playing smart and taking the two shot penalty because it was going to roll off the green and then he could’ve had to hit another four shots, so we just can’t assume that this was just a temper tantrum and that the ball wasn’t going to roll off of the green.

I don’t take it as him disrespecting the game or the tournament because the greens were really fast and even though everyone else has to play on the same green he has to, he was playing smart and you still have to applaud him for that.

Phil started the day at +6 and right now Phil Mickelson is at +17 in 81st place.

His weekend is pretty much over with and tomorrow he will just need to grind through it and just get through this weekend without any other catastrophes.
