Phil Mickelson is, without a doubt, one of the most interesting and polarizing players in professional golf. Over the past few years, Lefty has stopped biting his tongue and started using an unhinged method of communication regarding politics, the state of golf, and many other things.

However, when it comes to his golf game, he is just as unorthodox. He has never played a traditional game, instead using his flashy short game and dependable putting to win several Major Championships over his illustrious career.

Mickelson revealed recently that he is doing a lot of testing with different clubs from several manufacturers after parting with Callaway several years ago. Driver is among the most notable of the experiments he performs when not on a course for a tournament, but he also has a few other additions in the bag.

In a recent video titled “Inside My Mind for 9 Holes,” Mickelson revealed his thought process for using these different clubs and how his decisions are made ahead of a tournament.

Drivers

Mickelson plays with two drivers when he’s preparing for a tournament. This is a strategy he uses to learn how each club and its design will impact his game. Some are better for longer courses, while others might be more suitable for plotting your way around a course.

He is using two of the more popular big sticks on the market.

The first is the Callaway Elyte, which is no surprise. Despite his departure from Callaway a few years back, Mickelson has still stood by many of their products, including their drivers, irons, and wedges.

This is Phil’s go-to, as he highlights the control and distance he feels with it.

This is likely what Mickelson is using at the PGA Championship this week, but we’ll get a better peek at some point this week.

The second driver Mickelson is testing is the PING G440 LST, which he says he still hits very straight and long, but didn’t disclose exactly why he is experimenting with it.

Phil said that he plays with multiple clubs to figure out how each plays. He then determines which is more advantageous for each course.

He used this driver for the latter half of his nine-hole round, which was posted yesterday.

A New Addition: PING 7 Wood

A new addition, which Mickelson said just entered the bag was a PING G430 MAX 7 wood, which he says he hits about 235 yards.

This is simply another club that Phil felt would help improve his ability to plot around certain courses:

We can tell it’s the G430 MAX by the green highlighting on the face.

This video just goes to show how much experimenting goes into a pro golfer’s decisions in terms of clubs. It makes it even nicer that he is not tied down to one manufacturer, so he has much more freedom than others.
