Prime Putt’s Putting Mat: a Tier Above the Rest

Playing Through: No matter what your living & financial situation is, everyone has space for a putting mat. The problem, however, is picking the right one; the right size, materials, features, design, etc. Prime Putt, fortunately, is the solution. With a variety of sizes, Prime Putt is the closest you’ll get to being on a green when it’s raining, snowing, or pitch black out.

Every golfer wants to work on their game when they’re away from the course. Whether it’s a rainy weekend or the unduly long offseason, we all itch to work on our game and keep things sharp (you’re a liar if you’ve never done air-swings with a spatula in between flipping burgers).

While Prime Putt can’t help with your driver, it can be the ultimate solution to one of the most frustrating, underappreciated facets of the game: putting. Available in sizes ranging from 9 ft x 1 ½ feet (the single-hole Compact) to 15 ft x 3 ft (the three-hole XXL), the Prime Put offers the most realistic putting experience you could have in your home.

The reason why is that while most putting mats feel like tightly cut green carpets, the Prime Put is made with ½ inch thick, tour-grade nylon turf material that actually sits perfectly flat and rolls like a summer green. And while that’s impressive by itself, what’s really impressive is that the Prime Putt doesn’t just sit flat and roll perfectly the first time it’s set up; it sits flat and rolls true every single time you set it up.

Indeed, despite my best efforts to put creases and kinks into the Prime Putt from “folding” it up and leaving it in a corner for a few weeks, when I decided to roll a few putts, my Prime Putt Compact settled on my bedroom floor (eager to remind me that I should spend more time working on my flat stick if I expect my handicap to improve).

The Finished Walnut Backstop Adds a Really Class Appearance to a Functional Piece;
It Not Only Stops Rogue Putts, But Also Stores Extra Balls & Adds a Touch of Class to a Premium Putting Mat

Setting aside the fact that Prime Putt does the “putting mat” part better than every other mat I’ve previously tried, what really impressed me was the finish. Specifically, the Prime Putt has a wood backstop (which prevents the ball from rolling across the room). While most competitors just throw something cheap, but functional (plastic) that accomplishes the job, Prime Putt includes a hardwood backstop. The polished woodgrain pairs and premium turf come together and emanate the fit and finish of a bespoke, high-end car. Fortunately, however, you don’t need a tour card or Bentley sponsor to add a Prime Putt to your collection.

The Prime Putt is Free of Putting / Alignment Aids, Which Means You’re Practicing
on a Surface that Looks (and Feels) More Like a Green (a/k/a What You Play On)

The Prime Putt also avoids a pitfall that the majority of alternatives fall headfirst into: training lines. As you’ve probably seen, most other mats are covered with markings that make it easy to confirm you’re lined up. The problem here is that greens don’t have lines, so rather than practice with a false-sense of support, the Prime Putt simulates the surface you play on (that’s to say, nothing is stopping you from adding a chalk line or putting gate), with only subtle distance markings on the edge of the mat that signal each 3 foot increment from the cup.

The only thing I could file a grievance over is that Prime Putt does not include a carry or storage bag. But since the Prime Putt never fails to settle wrinkle-free on the floor, nothing is stopping you from rolling or even folding it up and tucking it in a closet or under your bed.

The Prime Putt is more expensive than what you might find on the shelves at a big box retailer, but with golf, I’ve quickly adopted the “buy right, cry once” mentality. And given the quality of construction and complementary materials, there’s a very good chance that the Prime Putt you buy will outlast whatever putter you’re playing right now (despite the fact that you said this is the last time you’re switching).

Ever since golf became a competitive outlet, nothing brings Eric more joy than a well struck 4 iron. And despite living in NYC, Eric makes it a priority to work on his game and fitness during the week, along with a round or two over the weekend. Fortunately, he’s got a very understanding fiancé who (for the time being) accepts him and his obsession. Follow Eric on IG @hozel_rocket.
