Proper Golf Attire and Survival Kit for the Course
Golf is a tough outdoor sport played in all elements of heat, cold, rain and maybe even unbearable sun that could challenge your play – and what you wear. Almost all courses require a dress code and most suggest wearing a shirt with a collar.
So now you have a big golf outing with your boss or client and you don’t want to look out of place. Lets make sure you have the proper golf attire. First, consider that in the middle of the golf season (May-Sept) no matter where you are located, it will be warm out – its summer! A nice pair of shorts or golf pants, like kakis, is usually appropriate. Never, ever, wear jeans and sneakers and leave the mesh shorts and wind-pants home. A small note of warning – there are some courses out there that are particularly stuffy, and some may not even allow shorts. In these cases we suggest calling the clubhouse ahead of time to ask the specifics of their dress code.
For the women golfers, make sure your shorts are long enough to avoid looking offensive. A golf skirt, similar to one you may wear playing tennis, is appropriate too.
Women are allowed to wear sleeveless tops instead of the normal collared polo short…but men better not make this mistake, you may just be asked to leave the course “muscle-man.”
The standard golf outfit for men is exactly what you see 99% of the pros wearing on TV. Throw on a collared polo-type golf shirt
and some khaki pants and you’ll fit right in. A pair of sneakers won’t fly. Sneakers don’t provide the appropriate grip and one way or another you’ll end up looking silly. Invest in a nice pair of golf shoes (don’t have to be expensive or fancy) and they’ll last you years. No matter what you wear, always remember to tuck in your shirt and wear a belt.
A hat is your choice. Many golfers will wear a hat to compliment the outfit while others will wear one to simply protect their noggin from sun burn, which brings us to our next point: What to have in your golf bag.
So it’s not a camping trip, but it is an outdoor sporting event that could last 5 hours. In that time period you may be exposed to sun, sweat, dehydration, blisters, cuts, bugs, ticks, muscle tears, etc. A smart golfer will have the essentials tucked away in their golf bag at all times. These items include:
- Water — Or another hydrating drink like Gatorade.
- Pain Medicine — Like Tylenol or Advil. Heat can bring headaches, and golf isn’t fun with a headache, plus muscles can tighten up or get sore quickly.
- Band-aids — You never know when you may get a blister or cut on the course, and if that ends your day, you’ll never live it down.
- Nourishment — A small protein or granola bar will keep your energy levels up.
- Towel — To wipe sweat or keep your head cool with cold water. Also a small washcloth can be wrapped around a slippery or wet golf grip in extreme conditions.
- Bug Spray — Fight off the mosquitoes and gnats.
- Sun Block — You wouldn’t spend 5 hours unprotected from the sun at the beach, so why do it on the course.
- Umbrella or Rain Jacket – Storms can come up quickly. Don’t be the only soaked guy waiting around the clubhouse to go back out.
- Ball Marker – Make sure you have one on hand so you can mark your ball and not disrupt anyone else’s line.
- Srixon Golf Balls — Of course.
Just remember that golf is an eloquent game of challenge and honesty. Look presentable and be prepared out there for all elements and obstacles that you’ll need to overcome to make the round enjoyable.
