The R & A has made their decision on John Daly and his request to use a cart for the Open Championship. The request had been denied. That’s right, it’s a no. The R & A released a statement saying the following;

Having considered all of the relevant factors, the Championship Committee has decided to decline his request. The R&A believe that walking the course is an integral part of the Championship and is central to the tradition of links golf which is synonymous with The Open. We must also ensure that, as far as possible, the challenge is the same for all players in the field.

The terrain at Royal Portrush is not suited to buggies and indeed the club itself does not permit their use. We have a serious concern that some parts of the course, where there are severe slopes and swales, would be inaccessible.

This is not a decision we have taken lightly but we believe it is the right one for The Open. John has a special place in our hearts as a Champion Golfer and he will always be welcome at the Championship both at Royal Portrush and in future.

ObviouslyDaly wasn’t happy about the ruling. Daly posted about his disappointment in a statement on twitter.

When Daly won the 1995 Open Championship at St. Andrews he secured his spot in history and this tournament

Despite the ruling and his physical limitations Daly is going to try to compete in the 2019 Championship at Royal Portrush on July 18th. Daly missed the cut during the PGA championship at Bethpage earlier this year shooting 75-76. I would be surprised to see him finish even one round knowing the issues he’s facing in his knee. I wouldn’t take him in any fantasy drafts but it will be good to see Daly out there walking the course, even if it’s only for a day or two.

Ed started playing golf when he was 18. It started out as a hobby and something he liked to do but by 2014 it had turned into a full blown obsession. Since then Ed has committed himself to improving and learning more about the game. He doesn’t work in the golf industry, he’s not a teaching pro, he’s a guy who just loves the game and enjoys sharing his thoughts with others who share the same passion.
